Some unique points to highlight of the all new F-450 with a regular production pickup bed, which was only offered as a chassis cab before. It has 2 available axle ratios of 4.30 and 4.88:1. The F-450 Super Duty with the optional ‘High Capacity Trailer Tow Package’ increases the GCWR (Gross combined weight rating) from 26,000 to 33,000 lb (15,000 kg). Maximum payload is 6,120 lb (2,780 kg). Maximum towing is 24,500 lb (11,100 kg). It comes standard with Crew Cab, 8-foot (2.4 m) long bed, DRW (Dual Rear Wheels), Limited Slip rear axle, 10-lug 19.5-inch (500 mm) wheels, Trailer Tow package, and the TowCommand TBC (Trailer Brake Controller). The only engine offered in the F-450 Super Duty will be the all new 6.4 L V8 Power Stroke twin-turbo diesel. The F-450 will be equipped with a standard 6-speed manual or optional 5-speed TorqShift automatic transmission.

The 2009 Ford F-450 Super Duty vehicle is back with its high towing capacity. This pickup was previously sold as chassis and cab forms mainly for tow truck companies and the likes, but was declared open in 2008 for the general public purchase. While small families prefer compact cars and others go for luxury sedans or sporty convertibles, this pickup is for those who require a vehicle with immense hauling and towing capability, say about 6000 pounds (hauling) and 24,500 pounds (towing). No vehicle in the market has yet matched this feat. There are other pickups in the market but this one claims to offer even better work capacity.

This time on, the front cabin is much roomier (with center console box and dual door pockets) with a good hint of luxury. The interior materials are quite impressive. The front styling and front track is distinct. The body is crew-cab styled, with a dual rear-wheel arrangement for greater strength and stability. The power telescoping outside mirrors are the first in the industry. The drop down tailgate step is nice, and a Stowable Bed extender adds to the new features. Three trims are offered for 2009 Ford F-450 SD Crew Cab 4X4 model, namely a simple XL Styleside DRW, medium XLT Styleside DRW and a classy Lariat Styleside DRW.

All trims have a 6 speed manual transmission (with overdrive) and a powerful 325 hp turbo diesel V8 engine, with hi-tech fuel injectors. The Power Stroke driven pickup delivers a comfortable drive while towing, with an efficient tail-brake controller Tow Command system. But when not loaded, the performance is strictly okay as expected from a truck with such towing capacity. The pickup gets slightly unwieldy because of the wide front end. Nevertheless, it has a small turning circle which is a relief. Safety features include antilock disc brakes but no airbags.

Chrome wheels, cruise control, CD player and other extra features come with the high end trims of this model. There are numerous options like rear seat DVD, power-adjustable pedals, power moonroof, navigation system, and reverse park assist. While many necessary improvements have been made successfully, one still wonders if this truck-man’s pickup will find many takers among customers. At least, most people would not require so high towing capacity, even though the figures are impressive. All said and done, the truck is robust, powerful, bold and bulky: A good buy at MSRP $44,235 – $52,840 if you want a massive workhorse.
