Ford E-150

The Ford E-Series, formerly known as the Econoline or Club Wagon, is a line of full-size vans (both cargo and passenger) and truck chassis from the Ford Motor Company. The E-Series is related to the Ford F-Series line of pickup trucks. The line was introduced in 1961 as a compact van and its descendants are still produced today. The Ford E-150 series are all standard 4-speed automatic vehicles with overdrive and the trims are offered in 2 categories, passenger vans with the extended wagon model or cargo vans editions. Choices range from a 4.6-liter valve V8 engine that generates 225 horsepower to a 5.4-liter 18-valve V8 that can produce 255 horsepower. This series of “flex-fuel” capable vehicles can now run on E85 ethanol fuel as well as straight regular gasoline with electronic stability control.

The E-150 Ford series for 2009 include Commercial Cargo Vans, Recreational Cargo Vans, XL and XLT Wagons and Commercial Extended Cargo Vans. All are equipped with a prominent chrome front grill and a more streamlined front with larger headlamps. Safety features include an in-dash navigation unit, AC and electronic traction control systems, rear view back up mirror and dual front airbags. The full size spare tire is under the body of the van.

The “cavernous” interior is equipped with 4-wheel ABS, and tilt steering. There is a choice of commercial or recreational trims and up to 8 passengers can be seated in the minivan. The Cargo Van has two bucket seats in front. The Passenger as well as the Cargo van has center-opening rear cargo doors. They either have 60/40 doors or a single slider on the passenger side. The only choice in the rear is swing out doors. The Ford Econoline as this series was formerly called comes with or without windows.

While these huge vehicles are not good looking or fuel efficient, they are capable of hauling lots of people or cargo and there is no doubt that for this purpose, they are the best choice of vehicles. While the E-150 van can tow as much as 7,500 pounds, the passenger van can tow 7,100 pounds. No wonder then that Edmunds. Co says “Tough, roomy, rugged and reliable, Ford’s Econoline has a favorable, well-earned reputation.
