Formerly called the Green Line, the VUE Hybrid offers decent gas mileage at an affordable sticker price. The 2010 VUE is unchanged and continues to offer weaker performance than its competition.

General Motors, Saturn’s parent brand, recently emerged from bankruptcy and announced plans to sell the Saturn brand to the Penske Automotive Group. Business should continue as usual for Saturn buyers and owners. GM will even supply the cars to Penske for the next few years. However, due to the sale GM has cancelled production of the highly anticipated 2 Mode model, a full hybrid that would have improved fuel economy and performance.

“The 4-cylinder Hybrid costs about $5000 more than the conventional 4-cylinder model,” says Consumer Guide. “It may be frugal, but that stiff price premium might take years of fuel savings to offset.” Still, reviewers especially like the VUE Hybrid’s low sticker price relative to the competition. However, there’s a price to pay for the lower sticker — competitors such as the Ford Escape Hybrid and Toyota Highlander Hybrid generally offer better performance or nicer interiors. The VUE Hybrid comes in front-wheel drive with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine.

Saturn Aura Hybrid

The 2007 Saturn Aura Green Line hybrid debuted at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. Based on the new midsized Aura, the hybrid Aura will begin production sometime in early 2007 and will hopefully be available in late Spring of the same year.

The Green Line Aura hybrid will offer a 164-hp 2.4 liter four-cylinder gasoline engine coupled with an electric motor, however, the Aura hybrid will not be able to function on electric power only and is considered a mild hybrid.

Still, GM claims the new hybrid Aura will offer 20 to 25 percent better fuel economy that a standard Aura, while costing just less than $2,500.00 more than a conventional Aura. Thus, the Aura hybrid should start around $23,000.

The Aura showed well at both the the LA and Detroit Auto Shows and is expected to be a big seller with its good looks and a much improved ‘Saturn-interior’.

Saturn Relay

The Saturn Relay was the first and only minivan from the Saturn brand of American automaker General Motors. It was introduced for the 2005 model year, and was built alongside its sisters, the Buick Terraza, the Chevrolet Uplander, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 in Doraville, Georgia. The Relay was the first Saturn vehicle without polymer side paneling, and is also the first Saturn that is a rebadged Chevrolet or Pontiac.

The Relay was introduced with a 3.5 L LX9 V6 that generates 200 hp (149 kW) and 220 lb·ft (300 N·m) torque, going from 0-60 mph in the 9-second range seconds. For 2006, a 3.9 L LZ9 V6, with 240 hp (179 kW) and 240 ft·lbf (332 Nm) torque, was added as an option, which delivered faster acceleration and better response than the 3.5L engine. For 2007, the 3.5 L V6 was dropped, leaving the 3.9 L as the base engine. Consequently, the optional AWD system was also dropped, since it could not handle the torque of the 3.9 L engine. Unlike its siblings, the Relay did not receive an optional flex-fuel engine for 2007. The Relay scored three “Good”s (the highest possible score) and two “acceptable”s (the second highest possible score) in IIHS crash tests. In terms of gas mileage, the Relay is rated at 19 miles per US gallon (12 L/100 km; 23 mpg-imp) city, 25 miles per US gallon (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg-imp) highway.

The Relay started at US$22,850. There were three available trim levels, 2FWD, 3FWD, and 3AWD. All Relays seat seven via folding/removable 2nd row captains chairs and a 50/50 third-row bench. The third-row bench folds flat but did not fold entirely into the floor. OnStar assistance and a DVD rear entertainment system came standard on all Relays. A navigation system was optional on Relay 3s. Front side airbags were standard on 3s and optional for the 2. Second-row side airbags were optional on all models.

The Saturn Outlook is a premium full-size crossover SUV which replaced the Saturn Relay, which had declining sales and was phased out with the other GM minivans. The Outlook debuted at the New York International Auto Show, and is based on the new GM Lambda platform, which it shares with the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. The Outlook features the second-lowest sticker price among GM’s Lambda crossover SUVs, slotting between the baseline Chevrolet Traverse and the mid-line GMC Acadia.

Saturn Vue

The Saturn Vue is a compact crossover SUV from General Motors’ Saturn marque, and is Saturn’s best-selling model. It was the first vehicle to use the GM Theta platform. The Vue is the oldest model in the Saturn lineup since the demise of the L-Series in 2005. A second generation Vue was launched in 2007 for the 2008 model as a rebadged Antara model. The vehicle is also known as the Chevrolet Captiva (Mexico, Europe, Brazil), GMC Terrain (Middle East, not related to the North American version), Holden Captiva MaXX (Oceania), Opel Antara (mainland Europe & Ireland), and Vauxhall Antara (UK). It replaced the Isuzu Rodeo in Canada because Saturn dealerships in Canada also sold Saabs and Isuzus, as Isuzu withdrew from Canada after the 2002 model year. Production will most likely end in 2011 as a result of GM selling Saturn (GM will continue to build Saturns for a little while under a contract with their former owner). Otherwise, the Chevrolet Captiva name used for this model in Mexico will head to the United States and Canada.

Saturn Sky

The Saturn Sky was the first sports car from the Saturn marque of American automaker General Motors. It was released in the first quarter of 2006 as a 2007 model. It uses the Kappa automobile platform shared with the Pontiac Solstice and Opel GT. The Sky concept was shown at the 2005 North American International Auto Show, with the production version following at the 2006 show. It was built at GM’s Wilmington, Delaware plant, alongside the Solstice and the Opel GT. The Sky features 18 inch (457 mm) wheels and a 2.4 L Ecotec LE5 straight-4 engine that produces 177 hp (132 kW) as well as a new straight-4 2.0 L direct injected turbocharged engine that makes 260 hp (194 kW). Both five-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available.

The styling for the Sky, penned by Franz von Holzhausen, is based on the Vauxhall VX Lightning Concept’s design. It is available in some European markets as the Opel GT. A rebadged version named the Daewoo G2X was unveiled as a concept vehicle for the South Korean market in 2006. The production version was released in September 2007. The Solstice, Sky, and GT are built in Delaware, as was the G2X until 2008. The aggressive styling garnered praise as a welcome departure from traditional Saturn design.

Saturn L300 Owners Manuals

Saturn L300

The Saturn L-series was a line of automobiles sold by General Motors’ Saturn marque.

The L-series mid-size sedans and station wagons were introduced in 2000. They were based on the Opel Vectra B and manufactured at a GM plant in Wilmington, Delaware. The L-series was available with I4 and V6 engines.

Poor sales of the L-series caused GM to cancel the line for 2005. The first L-series car was built in May 1999, and the last one rolled off the Wilmington line on June 17, 2004, after a short run of 2005 models. About 406,300 L-series cars were built in this period. The plant was then retooled to build the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters.

The replacement for the L-series, the Saturn Aura, arrived in August 2006 for the 2007 model year. The Aura is built on the Epsilon platform, also shared by the Pontiac G6 and the Opel Vectra C.

Saturn Aura

The Saturn Aura is a mid-size car produced under the Saturn brand of American automaker General Motors. It debuted as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005. The production model of the Aura was shown at the 2006 New York Auto Show in April, with production commencing in North America in the summer of 2006 for the 2007 model year. The Aura replaces the Saturn L-Series, which was discontinued after the 2005 model year. Although Saturn had never intended to use the Aura name for the production vehicle, the name ended up sticking as a result of the popularity of the concept.

The Aura was considered an important model for both Saturn and General Motors. It was part of a product rejuvenation for Saturn intended to make the firm profitable as well as competitive with European imports. Reaction to the Aura has been positive, both in terms of reviews and sales.

The concept used a 252 hp (186 kW) 3.6 L V6 and a new 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission.That powertrain is offered in the production model known as the XR. Also introduced is the 3.5 L V6 with 219 hp (163 kW), down from 224 in 2007 in the XE, and the hybrid 164 hp (122 kW) 2.4 L inline-4, down from 170 hp (127 kW), in the Greenline. The Aura, developed on the GM Epsilon platform, is available only as a sedan and is built at the Kansas City, Kansas, Fairfax Assembly plant.

Production of the Ion ended on March 27, 2007.

For most of the world, the 2008 Saturn Astra is old news. The car already exists in Europe as the Opel Astra, England as the Vauxhall Astra and in Australia and New Zealand as the Holden…can you guess? Yup, it’s the Astra there, too. We Americans are just the most recent recipient of GM’s world car, ours with a Saturn badge.

Although we’ve recently spotted the Saturn Astra during its final phases of testing here in America, it was back in October 2006 that we first learned that the successful compact will retain its Astra name in the U.S. Two months later GM officially announced its intent to sell the car in North America.

The 2008 Saturn Astra will be largely unchanged from its Opel counterpart. And based on previous attempts at bringing the Delta chassis over, like the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion, that’s a wise move. Opel designers were allowed a lot of freedom and the result is a clean and European look that GM doesn’t intend to meddle with in America.

Despite technically being a domestic car here in the U.S., the 2008 Saturn Astra will be built in Antwerp, Belgium. Its unveiling at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show confirmed that redesigned bumpers, to meet Stateside regulations, are the only real aesthetic change.

Our first drive of the 2007 Opel Astra 1.8 gave us an idea what to expect when the chassis makes it Stateside in November 2007. The Astra will compete with the likes of Honda’s Civic, the Mazda 3 and Volkswagen’s Rabbit.

It will come with a 1.8-liter Ecotec inline-4 with 140 horsepower, which puts it right on par with the base Civic. But it falls short of the Volkswagen Rabbit by 10 hp and the Mazda 3 by as much as 16. We can only hope GM brings over the more sporting turbocharged 2.0-liter 170-hp mill for the Saturn Astra Red Line. Or the 237-hp Holden Special Vehicles version dealt in Australia.

Bringing the Astra to America is the no-brainer GM should have pulled years ago. More than half a million Astras have been sold in Europe alone last year, and it’s a quantum leap forward from the 2007 Saturn Ion it replaces. More than just an economical Honda Civic alternative, the Astra is a darling among tuners overseas, including German tuners Steinmetz and Lumma. The large following is a stark contrast to the relatively small market share GM has in the American sport compact scene.

The Astra will arrive in both three- and five-door flavors, the former being deliberately sportier. The European three-door comes with a Sport switch, which tightens up the steering and throttle response, like that in our long-term Mini Cooper S. America may eventually see the Astra Panoramic, which features a cockpitlike windshield that sweeps overhead. Also a distant possibility is the innovative Astra Twin Top, which features a retractable, three-piece hard top, and would compete with the hard-topped 2007 Volkswagen Eos.
