Oldsmobile Cutlass

The minimal Oldsmobile Cutlass name was revived in 1997 for an upscale version of the new Chevrolet Malibu, replacing the Oldsmobile Ciera, and was exclusively sold in the United States. Built at the Oklahoma City Assembly plant, this model used the 107 in wheelbase GM N platform, shared with the Pontiac Grand Am, Buick Skylark, and Oldsmobile Achieva. This model was a bridge between Oldsmobile’s Achieva and Alero models, making this a placeholder model. It was also later regarded as a stop-gap measure to give Oldsmobile a model to sell below the larger Intrigue until the new Alero (also on the N platform) arrived in 1999.

Essentially similar to the Chevy Malibu of this generation, it did differ in its Oldsmobile split-grille fascia, all red rear tail lamps, and its unique optional chrome wheels. Its base model also offered more standard equipment than the Malibu, like a split-folding rear seat and power locks. However, it shares the same mechanical and design features as its twin.

Production of the N-body Cutlass ended July 2, 1999, marking it as the last car to bear the Cutlass name. It was replaced by the Alero. The Alero also replaced the smaller but related Achieva.

Oldsmobile Intrigue

The Oldsmobile Intrigue was a mid-size sedan manufactured from 1998 through 2002 by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors. The Intrigue’s design cues were first seen in 1995 with the Oldsmobile Antares concept car. The Intrigue was the first casualty in the phase-out process of Oldsmobile. Upon the demise of the Oldsmobile division in 2004, it was replaced by the new Buick LaCrosse (which was styled by the same Designer that did the Intrigue) the following year, in 2005.

The Aurora-inspired Intrigue was designed to compete more with Japanese automobiles, and replaced the aging Cutlass Supreme. It went into production on May 5, 1997. It was similar to a range of mid-sized sedans from other GM divisions, including the Buick Century, Buick Regal, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Monte Carlo and the Pontiac Grand Prix. The Intrigue was available in three trim levels: base GX, mid-level GL, and high-end GLS.

All Intrigues were built at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas, where the Grand Prix was also built (the Buick Century and Regal, and the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo were all built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada). For the 1999 model year, a new, sophisticated DOHC 3.5L “Shortstar” engine, a six-cylinder based on the GM Northstar V8, was introduced. On June 14, 2002, the final Intrigue rolled off the assembly line, as part of the Final 500 Collectors Edition. The 3.5L engine became standard from 2000-2002, the Intrigue was the only W-body car GM had offered with the most standard engine power.

Oldsmobile Aurora

The Oldsmobile Aurora was a fullsize luxury sports sedan / executive car made by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors and launched in 1995. The Aurora rode on the same Cadillac-derived G platform as the 2-door Buick Riviera.

The Aurora became the flagship luxury sport sedan Oldsmobile powered by a 4 cam 32 valve 4.0L V-8 replacing the Oldsmobile Toronado coupe in the line-up. The Aurora offered both the V6-powered version and a V-8 powered version from 2001-03. It was equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission with performance algorithm shifting. The closest successors to the Aurora are the Buick Lucerne (introduced as a 2006 model) and the Cadillac STS, both of which retain different versions of the Northstar V8.

Oldsmobile Silhouette

The Oldsmobile Silhouette and its siblings, the Pontiac Trans Sport (later the Montana) and Chevrolet Lumina APV (later the Venture), were a trio of minivans that débuted in late 1989 as 1990 models. Upon the demise of the Oldsmobile division in 2004, it was replaced by the newly designed Buick Terraza the following year, in 2005.

The first generation Silhouette was prominently featured in the 1995 film Get Shorty where it was repeatedly referred to as “The Cadillac of minivans”. GM’s attempt of releasing their first FWD minivans in 1990 pursued the company to create one of the very-first luxury minivans, however, at the same time, Chrysler released the Town & Country minivan.

Oldsmobile Bravada

The Oldsmobile Bravada was a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) from the now retired Oldsmobile marque of General Motors. There have been two different vehicles to bear this model name, the first and second-generation GMT330, and the 2002 to 2004 GMT360. The third generation model was the only one offered in Canada.

Production of the Bravada ended with the demise of the Oldsmobile marque in 2004. The last 500 Bravadas were produced as “Final 500″ special editions, each featuring custom seat embroidering and exterior badging inspired by vintage Oldsmobile logos, dark cherry metallic paint, unique chrome alloy wheels, and a medallion featuring that particular Bravada’s production number, ranging from 1 to 500. The last Bravada, the number 500, rolled off the assembly line in January 2004.

The Bravada bodyshell was brought back from the dead to be used in the 2005-2007 Buick Rainier. While the 2005-2009 Saab 9-7X got the Bravada’s All-Wheel-Drive system and has similar front fenders, they are not the same. The only shared panels are the roof and doors.

Oldsmobile Alero

The Oldsmobile Alero was introduced in spring 1998 as a 1999 model to replace the Achieva and Cutlass. The Alero went into production on April 6, 1998. All Aleros were built in Lansing, Michigan. The Alero was Oldsmobile’s last compact car as well as the last vehicle sold under the brand. Production ended on April 28, 2004.

The design of the Alero was originally previewed in 1997 with the Alero Alpha concept car, a futuristic V6-powered sport coupe that featured many design elements seen in the production Alero as well as some that were never meant for production.

The Alero was sold either as a 4-door sedan or as a 2-door coupé. It shared its chassis and many parts, including engines, with the Pontiac Grand Am, the other compact N body sedan. All Aleros came in base GX, mid-level GL, or high-end GLS trim; GL trim was split into three levels: 1, 2, and 3.

The Alero experienced minimal changes during its 5-year run. Most of these changes were either in choice of engines or options. In 2003, the Alero’s daytime running lights were changed from high-beam to low-beam.

The Alero was also sold in select European countries as the Chevrolet Alero, although only available as a sedan. The car still featured its Oldsmobile badges even though sold under the Chevrolet brand. Since most European consumers would not recognize what the badge stood for, Chevrolet badges were added to the grille and rear fascia during the 2000 model year. Since the phase-out of the Alero, it was replaced in Europe and Canada by the GM Daewoo-sourced Chevrolet Evanda/Epica.

Alero production ended with a special Final 500 Edition. These last 500 Aleros featured custom graphics inspired by vintage Oldsmobile logos, dark cherry metallic paint, and a plate featuring the car’s number out of 500.

The final Alero Final 500 Edition (#500 of 500), a GLS 4-door, also happened to be the final Oldsmobile ever built, and was signed under its hood by the employees of the General Motors Lansing plant and then given to the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum.

A preview of the planned replacement for the Alero was seen in 2001 with the unveiling of the Oldsmobile O4 concept, designed by Bertone. The car was an open top 4-seater with European styling but some Oldsmobile traits, and powered by the latest Ecotec I4 engine. The name had multiple meanings, including “Oldsmobile 4-Seater” as well as implying the year 2004 as a planned date for production.

Unfortunately, the O4 concept was unveiled a few weeks after General Motors announced that they would be phasing out the Oldsmobile brand, meaning that production possibilities of the O4 would never see reality. Because of this, a second generation Alero was never built and the car was phased out in 2004.
